Thu, 11/22/2012 - 00:10

Wed, 11/21/2012 - 16:25
2012-11-21T15:25:16Z Uribe-Tirado, Alejandro Castaño-Muñoz, Wilson This article considers the cycle of knowledge generation proposed by Nonaka and Takeuchi and sets out how the different indicators and expected results within the information literacy (IL) standards used in higher education contribute to this cycle. After analyzing each standard and its interrelation with the four options to generate knowledge of Nonaka's cycle, it was identified that these standards are more geared to the generation of explicit knowledge, and therefore, it is necessary to work on other activities, and new proposed standards of IL that promote the generation of tacit knowledge and information processes needed.

User participation in the categorisation of the State Library of Queensland digital image collections: characteristics, motivations and experiences

Wed, 11/21/2012 - 12:40
2012-11-21T11:40:19Z Mulatiningsih, Bekti Raunik, Anna Partridge, Helen In 2010, the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) donated their out-of-copyright Queensland images to Wikimedia Commons. One direct effect of publishing the collections at Wikimedia Commons is the ability of general audiences to participate and help the library in processing the images in the collection. This paper will discuss a project that explored user participation in the categorisation of the State Library of Queensland digital image collections. The outcomes of this project can be used to gain a better understanding of user participation that lead to improving access to library digital collections. Two techniques for data collection were used: documents analysis and interview. Document analysis was performed on the Wikimedia Commons monthly reports. Meanwhile, interview was used as the main data collection technique in this research. The data collected from document analysis was used to help the researchers to devise appropriate questions for interviews. The interviews were undertaken with participants who were divided into two groups: SLQ staff members and Wikimedians (users who participate in Wikimedia). The two sets of data collected from participants were analysed independently and compared. This method was useful for the researchers to understand the differences between the experiences of categorisation from both the librarians’ and the users’ perspectives. This paper will provide a discussion on the preliminary findings that have emerged from each group participant. This research provides preliminary information about the extent of user participation in the categorisation of SLQ collections in Wikimedia Commons that can be used by SLQ and other interested libraries in describing their digital content by their categorisations to improve user access to the collection in the future.

2012-11-19T20:04:33Z Gómez, Nancy-Diana Bongiovani, Paola In this chapter the access to knowledge (A2K) movement is based on definitions coined by theorists Benkler (2006), Balkin (2010) and Shaver (2007), who advance the concept of human development and equal access to knowl- edge as distributive justice. This chapter focuses on the role of Latin American countries in the WIPO development agenda and the role of library associations against excessive intellectual property regulations which impose barriers to access and ultimately the creation of new knowledge. The concepts of A2K to Open Access (OA), showing how OA can restore knowledge as a public good on a global scale. The chapter also provides an account of the growth of global OA, portrays the Latin American situation and takes into account OA indicators from Ar- gentina, Chile and Brazil. It also reports on international and regional projects, describing several collaborative projects developed in the region. The results of a survey to members of the LLAAR1 discussion list are presented. Finally, the chapter arrives at conclusions that integrate the concepts of A2K, OA, col- laborative work, and development and growth of Open Access in the region.

Collections d’images et questions posées à l’iconologie

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 15:14
2012-11-19T14:14:11Z Régimbeau, Gérard Image Collections and Iconographic Considerations Institutions, historians and the general public are interested in image collections as objects relating to an historic memory or to current social issues. Collections of images reveal certain traits specific to the Web that construct a scene that is useful to decode and to understand the characteristics of information and the communication associated with the publication of the document and its retrieval. Whether it be in a traditional format found in a library, or in the form of sites using cooperative and social indexing, or when images play a paradoxical role, as is the case of personal blogs, the use of these images can only urge the serious iconographer to study the contents as well as the collection itself.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 15:10
2012-11-19T14:10:52Z The question of research raised in this paper is how typologi, viewed here as a subject organization of information categories, in the field of contemporary art, can be of some help in the criticism of the information sources and their accessibility. In a first part, we study typology as a theoretical tool of documentation and research. A second empirical part is devoted to the elaboration of a typological chart based on the analysis of five major websites and gateways on plastic arts and art history.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 15:04
2012-11-19T14:04:31Z Régimbeau, Gérard This article studies the possibilities but also the difficulties met in the thematic searches on the contemporary plastic works through questioning made on two French data banks: Joconde and Vidéomuseum. The modalities and the limits of the indexation in these two information systems are obviously in the center of the problems raised by this study. The author ends in the necessity of adopting a mode of thematic indexation which is better adapted to the art of the XXth century, which leans on an informative complementarity and a reciprocity between the text and the image, and which uses the potentialities offered by the hypertext.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 15:02
2012-11-19T14:02:37Z Régimbeau, Gérard Access keys to Still Images : Using Internet resources for Indexing and Teaching Purposes. On the Internet, one can access and search image banks featuring different types of collections and different types of information processing systems. It is now possible to include them in courses aiming at building bridges between information processing techniques and the study of still images. Every site featured in this article is first commented, some theoretical principles are suggested with a view to devising exercises about the analysis, description and indexing of still images ; then general observations are made about how an information processing perspective can help students deal with the critical analysis of still images.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 15:00
2012-11-19T14:00:45Z Régimbeau, Gérard Internet caused, in the field of the contemporary art, changes which touch the mediation of the information. He allowed the birth of the electronic, new journal editorial shape, while imposing a phase of adaptation on the printed journal. After brief historiographical return on the study of the journal of contemporary art, this article attempts to show the diverse reactions of the "classic" journal in front of challenge of the on-line distribution ; to distinguish the various projects of electronic journals, older in the most recent; then to observe the models of the various sites. All these marks allowing to approach some of the mediating functions of the journal in networks where the art and the publishing cross now the Internet network.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 14:51
2012-11-19T13:51:53Z Régimbeau, Gérard With the new broadcasting possibilities that the web has to offer, several French-language contemporary art journals have started their own web sites. These journals are further links in the art world information network. Consequently, they initially need to be identified within this information network, if we are understand how important they are and how they function. A closer lokk shows that connections with the publishing world and printed journal models vary in importance and we must not put everything into the "electronic" category. Several different types of site are found on the web. These are : inserts (e.g. Espace sculpture) wich are reminders and references to the printed version ; accompanying sites (e.g. Revue noire) which are based on the paper version, but offer further possibilities adapted to the Internet ; and finalyyt, Synesthésie, which is a special case. The journal illustrates the profile and content of a totally electronic art magazine, and opens the debate on the nature and purpose of a new medium.

Mon, 11/19/2012 - 11:40
2012-11-19T10:40:01Z Audiovisual documentation on TV is being stilted for external factors -the economical crisis- and internal factors. The external factors have induced changes on different areas of TV such as program planning, decrease of production of in-house programs, close down of correspondent offices, mergers of different channels, etc. The internal factors, the digitalization of the audiovisual production and the analogical archive, have induced to change tasks that until now have been done by documentary makers and nowadays are being realized by journalists. Those factors affect not only the daily work of the documentary markers but also their raison d’être. The purpose of this article is to show that the actual questioning of the profession does not have any kind of reasoning. On one hand, the influence of the external and internal factors already mentioned over the documentary makers is not as negative as it may seem a priori; on the other hand, besides it is truth that this discipline will have to adapt itself to the new circumstances, day by day documentary makers are going to be more and more necessaries on TV.

Oral tradition of Minangkabau is very strong in many aspects of life, for example the tradition of maota di lapau (chatting on lapau), which is one way for men in Minangkabau to communicate and socialize. All forms of oral tradition in Minangkabau society contains of various information values such as, religion valuable information, information of historical value, customs and public practices information, information that has the values of local wisdom in the daily life of the community, as well as genealogical information or descendant of a family in the community. All of the information are received, developed, and derived to future generations through a wide variety of oral tradition, known by the Minangkabau society. These include various forms of oral tradition in a traditional ceremony which tend to be formal, oral traditions relating to the association in people's daily life, oral tradition of mantra, and the oral tradition in the form of performing arts. However, the issues raise at this time, oral tradition has begun to be abandoned and forgotten by the Minangkabau society. In addition due to the metanarrative discourse that create the public opinion such local culture is less meaningful, rapid information and communication technology development and the lack of any transfer in oral tradition affect the existence of oral tradition in Minangkabau society. Documentation and information centers, such as libraries, archives institution, as well as museum has a moral responsibility to identify, collect, preserve and actualize the oral tradition, particularly the information contained in the oral tradition. Preservation of knowledge in oral tradition is one step into the collective responsibility of government and society in preservation, storage, and the actualization of the oral tradition.
